Dear colleagues!

The State Literary Memorial Museum-Reserve of A. P. Chekhov "Melikhovo" with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Moscow Region announces to host the traditional Anton Chekhov International Reciting Competition. The coming event will be held for the tenth time – from 26 to 29 January 2020.

The competition is held annually among young actors and students of theatrical universities and schools of Russia and other countries. Qualifying rounds are held in several stages in Moscow, while the pinnacle event will be a gala concert and the awarding ceremony of prize winners in the Museum-Reserve "Melikhovo" scheduled on the day of the writer’s birth. Here, the competitors will enjoy a cultural program and tours of the Museum.

Every year the hosts come up with an original theme of this competition, such as: "Chekhov and Russian prose of the XIX century", "Chekhov and his contemporaries", "Chekhov and Dostoevsky", "Chekhov and Goncharov", "Chekhov and Cozakov". As can be seen from the above, in addition to stories by Chekhov, in the Museum-Reserve one can enjoy listening to works of other classics of the Russian literature, which definitely makes the competition more vivid and memorable. This year the theme of the competition is "Anton Chekhov and Ivan Bunin". These prominent Russian writers have their anniversaries in the coming year. In 2020, we celebrate the 160th anniversary of the birth of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, the owner of the Melikhovo estate, and as well as the 150th anniversary of his friend, poet, and writer Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin.

The Competition is open to young actors and last year senior students of theater universities and schools, which have «stage speech» and «art of declamation” in their plan of study.

Duration of presentation of works of authors stated in the Competition theme is 15 minutes at most.

The competent jury consisting of well-known actors, teachers, masters of declamation art will choose the best performers. The final structure of the jury will be announced later.

Competitive listening will be held on January 27 and 28, 2020 in Moscow (the venue to be specified later), and on January 29 – the birthday of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov - all participants will come up to the writer’s estate, now the Museum-Reserve "Melikhovo", to take part in a big gala concert and awarding ceremony of winners.
