Published: 5 July 2019

July 20 Melikhovo Museum will have a day of memory of Chekhov.

Its primary event will be a charity literary and musical marathon "Do not cease doing good!" It will be held in our Museum for the third time.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov left behind not only the 18-volume collection of his writings but also three schools built at his expense in Serpukhov district, a sanatorium in Yalta and a library in Taganrog. He treated patients for free throughout his life, helped the hungry, fought the cholera epidemic, took part in the country’s census, and this is not the whole list of his good deeds.

The motto of the Marathon is expressed by the words said by the main character of the story "Gooseberries": "Don't be satisfied with what you have done, don't let yourself be lulled to sleep! While you are still young, strong, bright and cheerful, do not cease doing good !!"

The central goals of this marathon are: cultivation of feelings of mercy, drawing public attention to people's needs, and rendering urgent assistance to families with children. Today, our assistance to these families is required more than ever. It is very important to remind such people that they are not left alone! The funds raised on this day will go to a family living in the urban district of Chekhov, which is in badly need of material support.

The memorial service at the monument to Anton Chekhov will launch program of the day, and then the Marathon will continue on several sites.

The veranda of the main house of the writer will be a stage for actors of Melikhovo Theatre, as well as for vocal group "Estetic band", soloist of the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre Elizaveta Pakhomova, performing artist of the Moscow Theatre and Concert Music Association "Gradsky Hall" Vitaly Kovalenko. Here you will also have an interesting meeting with the staff of the scientific Museum "History of the Central Research Institute of Tuberculosis." They will tell you about fighting tuberculosis in different periods of history. It is known that Anton Pavlovich Chekhov died of this disease.

It is still a challenging issue nowadays.

Throughout the day you may make use of the Marathon mail service supported by Russian Post. You will have a chance to send your wishes and greetings from Melikhovo directly to your family and friends in different parts of Russia and even abroad.

The samovar tea party mood will reign on the big glade, right in the center of Chekhov's estate! Here you will enjoy jokes and humorous sayings, smoking samovar and jam, riddles and nursery rhymes while our actors will tell you about the traditions of the Russian tea party. And, of course, you will have a cup of delicious tea! A sweet tooth will take a master class on painting gingerbread: "Full-flavored tea goes together with - a tasty treat!" Here you can make a real delicious cookie.

In addition to the above funs of this day you may also see three short films based on the stories by Anton Chekhov: "Death of the tapeur", "Charon" and "A mistress" directed by Andrei Selivanov.
