State Literary-Memorial Museum-Reserve of A. P. Chekhov "Melikhovo" supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Moscow Region proceeds with organization of our traditional international competition of declamation art named after Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. The coming IXth competition will be held here in Melikhovo - from 26 to 29 January 2019.
Each year our Organizing Committee proposes a new theme for the competition participants. As you may know, the year of 2018 has proved to be rich with literary anniversaries. But one of these events surely cannot be ignored: this November we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev.
His writing had a great influence on formation of Chekhov as a writer and it was together with him for the rest of his life. We do find direct and indirect references to and even quotations from works of this Russian classical writer in many stories and plays by Chekhov. For example, in The Seagull he directly compares his character - fiction writer Trigorin with Turgenev. It is this fact determined the choice of the theme of our competition in 2019, and we named it “Ivan Turgenev. Anton Chekhov".
The Competition is open to young actors and senior students of theatre schools, provided their plans of study have «stage speech» and «art of declamation».
Duration of declamation of works by authors stated in the Competition theme is limited to 15 minutes at the most.
A competent jury consisting of well-known actors, theatre teachers, masters of declamation art will choose the best performers. The final structure of the jury will be determined later.
Competitive listening will be held January 26-28, 2019 in Moscow (venue to be confirmed) and, on 29 January – the birthday of Anton Chekhov, – all the participants will go to the writer's estate, which is now the Museum-Reserve "Melikhovo". Here we will have a big gala-concert and awarding ceremony.
