The Museum-Reserve of A. P. Chekhov "Melikhovo" presents a new literary and artistic exhibition. It is the so-called exhibition-dialogue
Here you will discover a dialogue between two contemporaries, artists, outstanding masters of landscape in oil and in fiction: Isaac Levitan and Anton Chekhov. It is a dialogue they had throughout their lives. The artist and the writer, who belonged to the same era, the same environment, the same "fate"; two masters dowered with brilliant talents, who developed their own artistic methods, and enriched the art – painting, and literature – with "completely new forms of pictorial art and writing".
The similarity of motifs and images, artistic styles, and principles of depicting nature in Chekhov and Levitan becomes especially expressive when you look at the artist's sketches and read the writer's texts at the same time. Numerous assertions of these two celebrities about the nature of oeuvre and the roles of art, about the skills and principles of depicting a landscape, mutual assessments of each other's creativity – further emphasize and give “documentary evidence” such similarity.
We offer our visitors, not the traditional emotional story about how Levitan and Chekhov were good friends decorated with a traditional set of biographical stories that have long been firmly overgrown with their own mythology; we give you freedom of independent judgment to see again, with your own eyes, as it were, and trace back to the history and development of great human and creative friendship of two great Artists, as two narrators. That is why the exhibition "Landscape" is an exhibition for careful viewing and slow reading, an exhibition presented as – a dialogue between the viewer and the reader with original works of art.
The exhibition presents authentic landscape paintings and drawings by I. I. Levitan, V. D. Polenov, V. A. Serov, M. V. Nesterov, N. P. Chekhov, A. S. Stepanov, S. P. Kuvshinnikova, M. P. Chekhova, personal belongings of A. P. Chekhov and I. I. Levitan, rarities of the Chekhov family, authentic objects of the era from the collections of the participating museums.
In a special area of the exhibition, visitors will find a multimedia gallery of landscapes by Levitan and Chekhov, united by the harmony of motifs, images, colors, and moods. The video is based on materials from the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.
